Newport-Mesa Unified School District recently updated its Mobile Communication Devices Board Policy (BP 5131.8) on October 24, 2023, to create a more conducive learning environment that promotes academic focus and engagement and encourages positive social interactions among students. School policies will be adjusted to address these changes. Parents will be notified if their student is not following the new policy. Highlights of the policy are listed below.

Preschool-Grade 8:

  • Students may NOT use cell phones, smartphones, smart watches, or other mobile communication devices on campus.

  • Students may use phones located in the school office.

Grade 9-12:

  • Mobile communication devices must be turned off during instructional time.

  • Students may use a mobile communication device in the following circumstances:

    • In case of an emergency, or response to a perceived threat of danger.

    • When a teacher or administrator grants permission.

    • When an authorized licensed physician determines that the possession or use is necessary.

    • When the student's individualized education program requires the possession or use.

    • Smartphones and other mobile communication devices shall not be used in any manner that infringes on the privacy rights of any other person.

Students may contact parents/guardians from the school front office if needed. Parents/guardians may call the school front office if an important message needs to be shared with their child.

Please communicate with your child about this policy. We appreciate your cooperation as we strive to create the best possible learning environment for our students, free from distractions, and focus on academics and positive social interactions.
