Superintendents Character Trait Award winners 2025

Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) congratulates the seven high school seniors chosen by their respective schools to represent specific pillars of leadership: Caring, Citizenship, Courage, Fairness, Respect, Responsibility, and Trustworthiness. The Superintendent’s Character Trait Award winners were recognized at the April 22 Board of Education meeting.

At the meeting, each student received a certificate of recognition. Banners with their name, photo, school, and corresponding character traits are displayed in the district office, where they will remain for one year before being gifted to their respective alma maters.

“These outstanding seniors exemplify the values that shape strong, compassionate, and involved citizens. Each of them demonstrates a remarkable commitment to their school communities, serving as shining examples of the incredible character and dedication found throughout our District. We are proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing the positive impact they will continue to make in the future,” said Superintendent Dr. Wesley Smith.

Caring: Andi Lopez, Costa Mesa High School

Andi Lopez

Moving from elementary to middle school can be challenging, even more so if that school combines the middle and high school experience. Andi Lopez understands that and does all he can to make his fellow students feel welcome.

“Andi genuinely cares about creating a welcoming environment. He goes above and beyond to ensure everyone feels valued and has positive experiences on campus,” said Principal Dr. Dipali Potnis.

Whether as captain of the dance team, drama club, Red Cross club president, or first chair in flute, Andi provides caring leadership. He prepares thoughtful activities to engage his peers and works to help others reach their full potential. As assistant director for a recent theater production, he ensured a positive experience for everyone by paying attention to even the smallest details, from modifying costumes to working one-on-one with the actors.

After graduation, Andi intends to study music performance at San Diego State University.

Citizenship: Reece Rendon, Back Bay High School

Reese Rendon

Reece Rendon serves as a role model to his peers through his enthusiasm for learning and earnest respect for his peers and Back Bay staff. He takes accountability for being in class daily and diligently works with staff to ensure any missed assignments are completed for full credit. He is known for helping fellow students achieve their academic goals without hesitation. When another student experienced a technical issue in class, Reece stepped in to help, offering immediate assistance so the student could complete the assignment.

“Reece's kindness and respect for others inspire those around him, helping to create a supportive and welcoming environment. Whenever someone needs help, he leads by example, stepping up without hesitation to make a difference,” said Principal Scott Mazurier.

Reece plans to serve his country by joining the Marine Corps upon graduation. His long-term goal is to utilize this opportunity to earn industry certifications to help ensure his future employment upon discharge.

Courage: Max Douglass, Corona del Mar High School

Max Douglass

It takes courage to take new paths, to try something different and sometimes not succeed. Max Douglass knows that from experience. As an athlete, he competed in basketball and football before finding a passion for cross country. Though he was new to the sport as a junior, he finished his senior season as a CIF champion and ranked 16th nationwide.

“Max leads with courage, as demonstrated by his inspiring athletic journey. He embraced the challenges that each new sport brought, modeling a strong work ethic and unwavering respect for all people,” said Principal Dr. Jake Haley.

In addition to his success in athletics, Max triumphs in academics. His rigorous course load includes multiple Advanced Placement and honors-level classes, and he maintains a 4.24 GPA. With a positive attitude, he inspires his peers to discover new heights on their own journeys.

Max intends to attend the University of Notre Dame in the fall.

Fairness: Madison Stephenson, Monte Vista Independent Study

Madison Stephenson

Described as a relentless fighter for the underdog, Madison “Maddie” Stephenson can be counted on as an advocate for her peers. She consistently treats her peers and Monte Vista staff with respect whether in a private discussion or a group setting. During book club or other activities, she shows a commitment to fostering a fair and collaborative learning environment by ensuring everyone’s voice is heard and valued.

Her superpower is she can read a room and see the entire picture in whatever situation she’s in. If Maddie finds herself in a situation in which she can help, she intervenes to resolve the issue with honesty, kindness, and a firm sense of equity.

“Whether it’s standing up to bullying or creating a mental health website, Maddi’s compassion and sense of fairness know no bounds,” said Principal Dr. Racquel Stephens.

Maddie plans to attend Colorado State University to study early elementary education.

Respect: Alexa Madriz, Estancia High School

Alexa Madriz

As a volunteer for Estancia’s Alas tutorial/advisory program, Alexa Madriz shows the utmost respect to incoming students. Knowing “Alas” means wings in Spanish, she is thoughtful and understanding of new students who struggle to find connections on campus, providing comfort, support, and encouragement. Through this program, she acts as a school ambassador encouraging student involvement in extracurricular activities such as clubs and sports.

“Alexa exemplifies the best of Estancia. She is respectful of our school traditions, offers her time and assistance to her fellow students and Estancia staff, and brings joy and positivity to our campus community,” said Principal Michael Halt.

In addition to leading the brass section of the Estancia Band, Alexa also serves as drum major, showcasing her dedication and leadership as a trumpet player. Alexa also trains new students in basic marching skills, conducts warm-ups and drills, and directs the music for concerts and other performances.

Alexa intends to further what she’s learned in the Estancia High School's Medical Academy and pursue a career in nursing. She wants to use her bilingual skills to connect individuals with the health care, treatment, and services they need.

Responsibility: Noah Tran, Early College High School

Noah Tran

As ASB Wellness Commissioner, Noah Tran is instrumental in spreading awareness about healthy living and mental health programs throughout his school community. He coordinates campus-wide events such as Red Ribbon Week, Kindness Week, and Stress Awareness Week. Noah also encourages his peers to employ the benefits of the school’s garden and Kindness Rocks.

As president of the Community Service Club, Early College’s largest student group, Noah recruits peer volunteers for local events. His most challenging task was to round up students to volunteer at the Solace for Hope Jazz Festival, an event focused on raising mental health awareness. Since it was in the middle of summer, he was hoping to be joined by five of his fellow students, but he brought 15 of his peers.

The high level of responsibility Noah demonstrates extends beyond extracurricular activities. “Noah's responsibility is on display daily whether it's coming to his high school and college classes ready to discuss and engage respectfully with his classmates or being a person our community leaders can rely on in raising student volunteer involvement at various community events throughout the year,” said Principal Dr. Dave Martinez.

Noah intends to pursue a nursing career.

Trustworthiness: Heloise “Ellie” Goerrissen, Newport Harbor High School

Heloise “Ellie” Goerrissen

Heloise “Ellie” Goerrissen is widely recognized by her peers and Newport Harbor staff for her trustworthiness and integrity. She consistently upholds high standards in her academic and personal life, approaching challenges with honesty and a strong moral compass.

During a challenging group project in an Advanced Placement class, Ellie was entrusted with compiling the final report. She cross-referenced all sources to ensure accuracy and communicated openly with her teammates, ensuring everyone contributed equally and received proper credit.

“Ellie’s character reflects Newport Harbor High School’s core values of respect, responsibility, and integrity. Her dedication to doing what’s right, even when no one is watching, makes her a shining example of what it means to be a Sailor,” said Principal Dr. Sean Boulton.

She can always be counted on to follow through on commitments, whether it’s group projects, extracurricular activities, or simply being there for someone in need. Ellie’s friends trust her to listen attentively, offer genuine encouragement, and make everyone around her feel valued and supported.

Ellie plans to major in a science field at a University of California campus.

The Newport-Mesa community congratulates the 2025 Superintendent’s Character Trait Award winners and wishes them continued success.
