It’s been a wonderful school year, and we appreciate the many ways our students, families, and staff have contributed to its success. As we head into summer, we wish you a safe and enjoyable break. Whether you’re spending time at home, traveling, or enjoying outdoor activities, we encourage everyone to keep health, safety, and well-being in mind throughout the summer months.

Below are some helpful tips, developed in partnership with the cities of Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, to support a safe and healthy summer.

BICYCLE SAFETY

Bicycle and e-bike safety is essential. NMUSD encourages students and families to follow important safety guidelines, including wearing helmets, completing safety training, and using only approved devices based on grade level. These expectations are designed to help students build the skills needed to ride safely and responsibly.

Please review the Costa Mesa and Newport Beach Police Department’s Bicycle, E-bike & Road Safety flyer for more information.

***New Student Bicycle and E-Bikes Policy - Effective 2026/27 School Year***

As a reminder, beginning in the 2026–27 school year, NMUSD has a new policy regarding bicycles and E-bikes

Elementary & Middle/Intermediate Students (TK-8th Grade)

  • Students in elementary and middle/intermediate schools are strictly prohibited from possessing or operating E-bikes, E-motos, and other devices, as listed in the definitions of BP 5142.04, on school property, including the periphery of campus, at all times.

  • Students are encouraged to ride bicycles and are required to wear a helmet and participate in a bike safety training, along with other requirements outlined in BP 5142.04.

High School Students (9th-12th Grade)

  • Students in grades 9-12 may possess an E-bike on campus.

  • E-motos and other devices, as listed in the definitions of BP 5142.04, are strictly prohibited on any district property.

  • Students are required to participate in an E-bike/bicycle safety training program, along with other requirements outlined in BP 5142.04.

INDEPENDENCE DAY - FIREWORKS

As the Fourth of July approaches, we encourage families to follow local safety guidelines.

City of Costa Mesa

Only fireworks with the State of California’s “safe and sane” label are permitted in the City of Costa Mesa —please use them with caution. Please review the City of Costa Mesa Fireworks Guidance for more information.  To report illegal fireworks, contact the Costa Mesa Police Department at (714) 754-5252.

City of Newport Beach

All fireworks are illegal in Newport Beach, including “safe and sane” fireworks. For a safer celebration, consider attending a professional display or using alternatives like glow sticks, confetti poppers, or streamers.

To report illegal fireworks, contact the Newport Beach Police Department at (949) 644-3717. To help keep emergency lines open for emergencies, please only report illegal fireworks if you are witnessing the activity in real time and can provide the exact location (address or cross streets), a clear physical description of the person(s) involved, and observed activity of actively setting off fireworks. This information is critical to allow officers to respond effectively and prevent emergency lines from becoming overwhelmed.

WATER SAFETY

Water safety is essential, as any body of water can pose risks without proper precautions. As families enjoy pools, beaches, and other water activities this summer, we encourage you to stay alert and informed. Please visit the City of Costa Mesa Water Safety and City of Newport Beach Ocean Safety websites for recommendations.

STAY HYDRATED

As temperatures rise, it’s important to stay hydrated to maintain energy, focus, and overall wellness. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, dizziness, and more serious health issues. To help prevent dehydration, carry a reusable water bottle and drink water regularly—even if you’re not feeling thirsty.

SUN SAFETY

Protecting your skin from the sun is an important part of staying healthy during the summer. Wearing sunscreen is one of the easiest and most effective ways to guard against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Be sure to reapply regularly, especially after swimming or sweating. You can also stay comfortable and protected by wearing hats, sunglasses, and lightweight, long-sleeved clothing when spending time outdoors.

TRAVEL SAFETY

A little extra awareness can help keep summer fun safe for everyone. Always wear a seatbelt, and make sure younger children use appropriate car seats or booster seats. When traveling, consider sharing your plans with a trusted friend or family member and check in regularly.

SCHOOL SAFETY

As always, NMUSD remains committed to the safety and well-being of every student. For more information about our school safety practices and resources, please visit our School Safety Website

Whatever activities you choose to engage in this summer, we hope these tips help create a safer environment for your children during the break. Have a safe, healthy summer, and we look forward to welcoming students back to school in August.
