Student safety remains a top priority for Newport-Mesa Unified School District, both during the school year and throughout the summer months. As students and families head into the summer break, the district encourages everyone to stay mindful of health, safety, and well-being—whether at home, online, or in the community. Below are some summer safety tips to help students and families have a healthy summer.

Stay Hydrated

As temperatures rise, it’s important to stay hydrated to maintain energy, focus, and overall wellness. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, dizziness, and more serious health issues. To avoid dehydration, carry a reusable water bottle with you and drink water regularly, even if you’re not feeling thirsty.

Sun Safety

Too much exposure to UV rays can cause sunburn, skin damage, premature aging, and increase the risk of skin cancer. But wearing sunscreen is one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Remember to reapply often, especially after swimming or sweating. It’s also helpful to wear hats, sunglasses, and lightweight, long-sleeved clothing.

Travel Safety

A little extra awareness goes a long way in making sure summer fun stays safe for everyone. Wear seatbelts and ensure that younger children use appropriate car seats or booster seats. Share travel plans with trusted friends or family members, and check in regularly.

Bicycle Safety

Riding a bike is a fun and healthy way to get around, but it’s important to follow safety rules every time you ride. In partnership with the Costa Mesa and Newport Beach police departments, we emphasize the importance of bicycle safety. Wearing a properly fitted helmet greatly reduces the risk of head injuries in case of a fall or crash, and reflective gear and lights help increase visibility, especially at dusk or dawn. Please follow safety precautions regarding bicycle, e-bike, and road safety

Independence Day - Fireworks

"Safe and Sane" fireworks are permitted in Costa Mesa, while all fireworks are illegal in Newport Beach. As we approach the Fourth of July holiday, we suggest you review the fireworks safety guidelines provided by the City of Costa Mesa and City of Newport Beach. As a reminder, it is a violation of the California Education Code to bring fireworks of any kind onto school premises.

Water Safety

All types of water can be dangerous in the wrong situation, so please stay vigilant. With families enjoying water activities this summer, please refer to the City of Newport Beach Ocean Safety and City of Costa Mesa Water Safety websites for safety recommendations.

School Safety: As always, NMUSD remains committed to the safety and well-being of every student. For more information about our school safety practices and resources, please visit our School Safety Website

Whatever activities you choose to engage in this summer, we hope these tips help create a safer environment for your children during the break. Have a safe, healthy summer, and we look forward to welcoming students back to school in August.
