construction at Ensign, Newport Coast and Estancia

Welcome to the latest update on a few major school construction projects. This update provides you with a snapshot of our progress and the exciting developments occurring at various school campuses. Our commitment to enhancing our facilities and creating an environment conducive to learning and growth remains steadfast, and we're thrilled to share our recent achievements with you.

Facility Master Plan

We are in the process of developing a facilities master plan which will identify the district's long-term maintenance and facility needs to continue to provide facilities that support our quality educational programs. It is intended to guide our district in the planning of ongoing facility maintenance, such as flooring, paint, roofs, and long-term capital improvement projects throughout the district.

The plan is developed in collaboration with facility experts, school and district leadership, and in consideration of community input. Please join us at one of our upcoming community input sessions and be part of the process to enhance facilities at all our schools and visit https://www.nmusdplan.org for more information.

Eastbluff Elementary Multipurpose Room Refresh

Stage with audiovisual equipment

This project is nearing completion, with the installation of tack boards and permanent hand railing coming soon. In upcoming months a second phase of the project will include painting of the interior, new flooring and new window coverings.

To better support performances and a variety of school events, the District is developing a districtwide audio visual standard for multipurpose rooms. Eastbluff Elementary will be the first school to pilot the system, which is anticipated to be installed at every elementary school in the District.

Down the Road

Elementary School Multipurpose Room Upgrades

This project includes an upgrade of the audio-visual equipment in elementary school multipurpose rooms. Facilities staff is working with schools to determine each of their needs to establish equipment specifications, budget estimates, and project schedules.

Elementary School Playgrounds

This project includes the replacement of elementary school playgrounds to include new playground equipment with shade incorporated into the play structures, and replacement of wood chips with rubberized flooring or artificial turf.

High School Sand Volleyball Courts

This project is in the early stages of planning for the addition of sand volleyball courts at Estancia, Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa, and Newport Harbor high schools. Site assessments with architects will be reviewed with each campus administrator prior to progressing in design. A construction start date for this project has not been determined.

Harper Assessment Center Parking Lot Improvements

This project includes expansion of the existing parking lot including new parking stalls and alterations for an accessible pedestrian path from parking lot to administration building. Demolition of an existing, unused relocatable building was completed in the summer of 2023 to pave the way for expansion of parking lot. A construction start date for this project has not been determined.

Corona del Mar Scoreboard Replacements

It is anticipated that varsity baseball and aquatics scoreboards will be replaced in spring 2024.

Costa Mesa High School Mustang Field and Varsity Field Improvements

The current Costa Mesa High School Sports Complex includes a football field with bleacher seating for nearly 1,000 spectators. Plans are now in progress to expand the seating capacity of both home and visitor sides to a total of 2,000 seats. The project also includes a new team room, restrooms, and various site improvements. Additionally, netting will be installed on the varsity baseball and softball fields.

The project is currently in the early design phase with a construction start date yet to be determined.

Estancia High School Football Team Room and Weights Relocation

Plans are currently underway to renovate the existing drama building to convert it to a new football team room, coaches office, and indoor/outdoor weight area to better accommodate the needs of the school. The project is currently in the early design phase with a construction start date yet to be determined.

Estancia High School Student Courtyard

Plans are underway to construct a student gathering area with shaded seating and landscaping in the concrete area where the former pool was located. A design is expected to be submitted for state approval in October, with a construction start date yet to be determined.

Newport Harbor High School Aquatic Complex

This project includes two phases, which will be combined to minimize downtime of the pool. The design for phase one is complete, and includes shade structures, lighting, and bleacher replacement.

Phase two, which is currently in the design stage, includes:

  • Deepening of the pool to be mostly eight feet with the intent to accommodate two concurrent water polo activities

  • Smaller section of a four-foot shallow end to accommodate community pool programs

  • Replacement of pool deck

  • Renovation of the pool building which includes coaches’ offices, boys and girls locker room and restrooms

  • Mechanical equipment replacement, as needed

School and District staff will work collaboratively with the City of Newport Beach to relocate aquatic activities during construction, as the pool will not be available during that time. All efforts will be made to minimize pool closure timing and impact to aquatics programs.

Start of construction is anticipated to begin in fall of 2024, with completion for the start of the 2025-26 school year.

Newport Harbor High School Culinary Renovation

The District is currently in the early planning stages to improve the culinary program kitchen and learning space. Project scope and timing yet to be determined.
