As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we want to remind families of the immunization requirements for all students attending schools in Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD). Ensuring that your child is up-to-date with their vaccinations is crucial for the health and safety of our school community, and a requirement for school attendance.

NMUSD follows California’s immunization requirements, which require students to have up-to-date vaccine records to attend school and participate in activities. Immunizations are checked when students enter preschool or kindergarten, move to middle or high school, or enroll at any grade.

Required  Immunizations

  • Transitional Kindergarten (TK) - 6th grade*
    • 4 Polio
    • 5 DTaP
    • 2 MMR
    • 3 Hepatitis B
    • 2 varicella
    • Oral health exam - TK, K or 1st*
  • 7-12th grade*
    • TK-6th immunizations, plus TDAP

*Whichever is the first year the student attends public school.

Submission

If you are new to the District, you must upload your child’s immunization documentation via the Aeries Enrollment portal when you enroll your child. If your child is currently an NMUSD student transitioning to TK/K, 7th, or 9th grade, you must upload your child’s immunization documentation via the Aeries parent portal. Your child’s Immunization records must be up-to-date and submitted before the start of the school year.

Medical Exemptions

If your child’s doctor needs to submit a medical exemption (including a temporary one), it must be done through the California Immunization Registry (CAIR) system. This is the only way a student may attend school without being fully immunized. Students who are still on schedule for their next dose, based on state guidelines, may be enrolled conditionally. Personal or religious exemptions are not allowed.

Special Circumstances

Students with an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), foster youth, and students covered under the McKinney-Vento Act have different guidelines. Please contact our Health Services team at 949-515-6730 for more information.

Ensuring that all students are immunized is critical for the health and safety of our school community, and a requirement for school attendance. Thank you for your cooperation and attention to this matter. Please visit the NMUSD health services webpage for more information.
