National Honor Society

National Honor Society was founded by the National Association of Secondary School Principals in 1921 to “recognize and encourage academic achievement while also developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy.” Those four characteristics are scholarship, character, service and leadership.

Corona del Mar High School’s chapter of National Honor Society was chartered on August 7, 2006. CdM NHS members, about 40 juniors and seniors, meet on Wednesdays during lunch twice a month and occasionally outside of school to plan and organize service projects such as Academic Integrity Week and the Pomona Elementary School Book Drive and Book Fair. Members are reviewed each semester for standards as far as GPA, meeting attendance, service project participation and character.

Membership in NHS is selective and it honors students with outstanding scholarship, character, service and leadership. The new member process takes place during March and April each year. Membership is open to CdM sophomores and juniors that meet the following criteria:

  • Academic – Students must have a cumulative (all semesters in high school) minimum GPA of 3.5.
  • Character – Students must complete an essay and participate in an interview.
  • Service – Students must have evidence of service including a description of that service and hours involved.
  • Leadership – Students must have evidence of leadership (elected, appointed or voluntary) including a description of that leadership.
