Newport-Mesa Announces Recommendations for New Principal and Assistant Principal

Newport-Mesa Unified School District Announces Recommendations for New Principal of Costa Mesa Middle School and New Assistant Principal of Corona del Mar High School

 

Newport-Mesa Unified School District (N-MUSD) is pleased to announce the recommendation of Dr. Jennifer Padilla as principal of Costa Mesa Middle School and Mr. Daniel Valenzuela as assistant principal of Corona del Mar High School.

 

Dr. Jennifer Padilla (recommended principal of Costa Mesa Middle School)

 

Dr. Padilla has 17 years of experience as an educational leader in various school districts throughout southern California. She is known for her collaborative approach in building relationships with staff, students and parents to provide a safe and enriching learning environment for all students.

 

Throughout her educational career, Dr. Padilla has coordinated intervention and enrichment courses, collaboratively designed and implemented staff professional development for site and district initiatives, articulated with feeder schools to provide seamless transitions for incoming students, developed and implemented the district’s multi-tiered systems of support framework, implement a positive behavior support program, including the development of school-wide behavior expectations matrix, lessons and reinforcement systems.

 

In her most recent role Dr. Padilla serves as the interim principal for John H. Glenn High School in Norwalk. She also has served as summer school principal and assistant principal, responsible for the overall management of school operations, curriculum and instruction, attendance, discipline, security and facilities.

 

“My vision for education is to provide students with a rigorous and balanced combination of academic, career technical, and extra-curricular challenges coupled with systematic systems of supports and enrichment,” said Dr. Jennifer Padilla.

 

Dr. Padilla’s previous roles include serving as dean of students at Norwalk High School, where she was responsible for the site security plan - including emergency procedures and drills, attendance intervention programs, and evaluations of security and classified staff. She also served as assistant principal and an English teacher at Silverado High School in Victorville.

 

Additional responsibilities at Silverado High School include Dr. Padilla serving as an adviser for the yearbook, journalism, multi-media communications academy and dance club. She also served as WASC team leader and school site council representative, in addition to serving on the district’s assessment committee.

 

Mr. Daniel Valenzuela (recommended assistant principal of Corona del Mar High School)

 

Mr. Valenzuela has been a teacher for the past eight years at Estancia High School and currently serves as the interim assistant principal at Corona del Mar High School. His experience as an effective educational leader has garnered the respect of his fellow peers, parents, students, and members of the community. Mr. Valenzuela builds positive relationships with intellect and compassion by leading with a communicative and collaborative approach.

 

During his time as a teacher at Estancia High School, Mr. Valenzuela served as the World Language Department Chair and taught several Spanish courses, leveraging instructional strategies and the use of technology to engage students and reinforce learning. In 2011 he was awarded teacher of the year and in 2013 he received a NMUSD Superstar Award.

 

In his most recent role as the interim assistant principal for Corona del Mar High School, Mr. Valenzuela has gained invaluable experience working as an administrator in the front office and insight into the overall management of a high school campus. Working alongside administrators, counselors, and teachers Mr. Valenzuela has a deeper understanding of school operations, curriculum and instruction, attendance, discipline, security and facilities, and disaster preparedness. He is also a member of the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) team, fostering a positive school climate.

 

“As assistant Principal I hope to foster a campus culture that students want to be a part of and assist in the continual development of an academic program that is rigorous, student centered, and engaging,” said Mr. Valenzuela.

 

Mr. Valenzuela obtained his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration through Concordia University, his Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish Language and Culture, and his minor in Educational Studies from UC Irvine.

 

Both appointments are scheduled for approval by the Board of Education at the May 9, 2017 board meeting.
