We are now accepting applications for both tutors and tutees.

If you excel in any class or subject, the Peer Tutoring program needs you to help tutor other students.  Not only is this a great way to help others, but it is also an opportunity to earn community service hours.

If you need help in any of your classes, the Peer Tutoring offers you help-for free!  All you need to do is fill out a tutee application, letting us know how we can help.

Tutee and Tutor applications are available in the counseling office.

See Miss Bentwood if you have any questions regarding Peer Tutoring.

Corona Del Mar High School offers a great community service learning opportunity on campus. We host the Peer Court program sponsored by the Orange County Constitutional Rights Foundation (CRF-OC).

Since the early 1990's, a growing number of U.S. schools and communities have developed youth courts as learning laboratories to teach young people about citizenship and how to act for the common good. By providing a forum for students to deliver justice to peers who have engaged in first-time criminal activity, or other problem behavior, youth courts put civics into practice.

The mission is to change illegal activities of juvenile offenders by focusing upon practical, educational experiences for the minors and their families in the courtroom, classroom and at home; to teach individual accountability and responsible decision making for all participants.

CDMHS will host Peer Court sessions in the vocal music room (414) from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. on the following dates:

9/29/10, 2/9/11, 3/9/11

We will need 50-100 student volunteers for each session, to serve as jurors, translators and bailiffs. We will have judges, attorneys, a probation officer, a CRF-OC staff member and a CDMHS staff member coordinating the court sessions. Students may sign up at the Community Service table located in the middle of the 200 building and will earn 2 hours of community service for participating!

Corona Del Mar Sweeps the Anteater Regatta

In a highly competitive Regatta it all came down to the last race.  As the final race began CDM was ahead of Newport Harbor High School by 10 points and in a 27 boat fleet no mistakes could be made.  CDM had a great start and began the last race half a boat length ahead of Newport.  CDM maintained the lead around the windward mark as Newport had to tack away.  CDM extended its lead to the reach mark as Newport tried to take inside advantage.  At the leeward mark CDM was still in the lead and Newport fought hard to catch up.  With the finish line in sight CDM Won the Gold Division.

When the last race began for the Silver Fleet CDM had pretty much secured the victory.  The team was strong from the Saturday start through the Sunday afternoon finish.

The conditions on both Saturday and Sunday were challenging.  Saturday the wind was blowing 12 knots from the South and constant rain.  It was bitterly cold on the water and the sailors were in their foul weather gear.  Sunday the wind stayed the same but Saturday's rain gave to clear chilly blue skies.

The combined Gold and Silver fleets had over 48 boats and over 200 sailors participating.

Representing CDM in the Gold Division were: Michael Dahl, Madison Vitarelli, Tyler Macdonald, Brooke Donahue, Brett Potter, Kieran Chung, Chloe Dapp, Michael Madigan, Shane Corwin, Keenan Chung, Hanna Hummelberg, Konner Boivin, and Mackenzi Burke.

Representing CDM in the Silver Division were:  Austin Boyce, Brandon Ludgate, Fredrik Gustation, Cody Reddin, Brian Smith.

Coach Nathan Dunham commented on the extraordinary effort that all sailors gave in a highly competitive regatta in challenging conditions.  "The hours of practice are paying off."

Special Recognition goes to Michael Dahl and Madison Vitarelli for receiving 6 first places in the Gold Division and to Frederik Gustation and Cody Reddin for receiving 5 first places in the Silver Division.

This Wednesday at lunch, University of Montana will be returning to share with students the opportunities and unique options available for B students.  All Juniors and Seniors are invited and there will be pizza provided!  Please RSVP to Marianne Scott and come learn about the University of Montana at Missoula, perhaps one of the 4-year options that presents the best of many worlds.  You are in a big city, yet can be isolated on a wilderness hiking trail; you are on a medium sized campus, yet instructors are praised for giving individual attention and making themselves readily available; there is a love for athletics, especially football, yet there is an equally intense passion for the wilderness and nature. The University of Montana provides a diverse campus environment that is very accepting of all students while offering top notch academics taught by passionate instructors who are "nationally known". The University of Montana has something to offer every student and is ranked fifth in the nation among public institutions for producing Rhodes scholars.

This week’s Four-Year college is a unique option for B students.  Prescott College is located in the Arizona mountains and has a reputation for being a very liberal college that cares about the environment. There is a wilderness orientation program and popular majors include education, teaching and environmental studies.  Students at Prescott design their own academic programs and self-direction is the foundation of Prescott’s culture. The goal at Prescott is to fuel your passion and give you a deeper understanding of the world around you through collaborative learning and personal experience.  Students are challenged to think critically, explore the world, and collaboratively form solutions. Grades are optional at Prescott and narrative evaluations of your work are the norm in classes that range in size from 10 to 19 students.  If you are looking for a unique college experience that enables you to take control of your education and make a positive impact in your community and in the world, then Prescott College is for you.

This week we are highlighting a couple of 4 year colleges that will be on campus at the Regional Admission Counselors of California (RACC) Mini College Fair on Thursday, November 12th at 12:20 pm in the Small Gym. Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity to explore some of the well known 4-year college choices and learn about some of the new options out there as well.

Texas Christian University is a major teaching and research university with the feel of a small college.  The TCU experience includes small class sizes with top faculty, cutting-edge technology, liberal arts and sciences curriculum and real-life application through faculty directed research, group projects, and internships.  Greek life is one of the most popular activities, along with over 200 clubs and organizations as well as a spirited NCAA Division I athletics program. TCU definitely focuses on the “student community”.  TCU receives a large number of applicants each year but they work hard to consider applications holistically.  Students at TCU are encouraged to consider and follow their own beliefs and the mission of the university is to educate individuals to think and act as ethical leaders and responsible citizens in a diverse, global community.

The University of Arizona offers sunny skies, quality affordable education, great school spirit and outstanding programs that fund undergraduate research experiences abroad.  Tucson provides a superb experience for those who love the outdoors; hiking, biking, rock climbing, and golf are among the options in this oasis of learning in the desert.  The clear Arizona skies are home to one of the countries best astronomy programs and the university also has many nationally rated programs including nursing, sociology, management information systems, anthropology, creative writing, and computer and aerospace engineering.  The university boasts an impressive academic faculty and conference-winning athletics.  The Average incoming GPA is 3.39 and there is a wide range of options for areas of study with over 114 majors offered and several concentrations within each major to choose from as well.

Hello,
For the 2nd year in a row Middle ASB is collecting unused candy.  Did you buy too much candy and get very few trick-or-treaters? Did you get too much candy and would like to put it toward a good cause? Are you out shopping and see that Halloween candy  is 50% off. Then help Middle School ASB  with "Operation Candy". Bring any unused candy to the MS ASB room. If the door is locked you can then bring it to the ASB window, front office or to Ms. Fusaro's classroom #327. The candy  will be used for many things, to name a few it will be used to send to the troops and packaged for the veterans at the Long Beach VA Hospital.  Last year we collected over 50 trash bags of candy and were able to send candy to the troops till the end of school.  We hope to be able to do the same again this year. Thanks for your support.

**We are also collecting used costumes that you don't want anymore - masks, wigs, accessories, shoes, costumes etc. you can also bring theses items to the ASB room.

Thanks again.
Ms. Fusaro
