Team Info

Corona del Mar High School Mountain Bike Team

Corona del Mar students have participated in the So Cal High School Mountain Bike League since 2009. We have had a team made up of exclusively CdM students since 2011.

The So Cal  league is not affiliated with CIF. Mountain Biking is not an official school sport and you can not currently get PE credit for participating. But you can have a lot of fun!

The So Cal league is a cross-country mountain bike league. This is not "downhill" mountain biking. It is not dirt jumping or even "all mountain" riding. The stuff you see on YouTube that makes for great cinema (drops, rocks, and jumps) also makes for broken collar-bones and head and neck injuries, so we don't do that!  We teach skills to help kids be able to ride safely (in terrain that still might terrify the average non-rider off the street); basic skills like turning, braking, shifting. We get in shape to climb the hills. We require helmets anytime the rider has a leg over the bike. Coaches are trained and background checked.

There are 5 So Cal league races plus one State Championship race held in the spring between Feb 15 and May 15. Races are held in various locations throughout the Southland (from Temecula to Tehachapi to Santa Barbara). The races are anywhere from about 10 miles (for freshmen) to 24 miles (for Varsity). These races have grown from around 70 participants in 2009 to over 600. Boys, girls, junior high, and high school are all invited to participate. There are no cuts to the team, but a minimum GPA of 2.0 is required. Races are very well done. Riders are grouped by age and ability level. Staggered starts spread the fields out to avoid congestion. Adult course Marshals stationed at strategic points along the race course encourage riders, warn of obstacles, and keep spectators off the course. There is a "sweep," an adult who rides with the slowest rider in each wave, who makes sure everyone gets through the course safely. Hundreds of parents, grandparents, siblings, other riders, and friends cheer on the competitors on race day. Barbecues are going in the "pit" area, and the top 5 riders in each wave are recognized in an awards ceremony following the last race of the day.

During the mountain bike season, which runs from December 1 to about May 15, we generally practice from 3:30 - 5 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and then have a team ride on Saturday mornings. Most of our practices are held in the El Moro State Park/Laguna Coast Wilderness Park located just inland from PCH between CdM and Laguna Beach.
