Mandatory Orientation Meeting

I hope you are excited about taking online AP Econ & Gov this year. Before you start, however, you must attend a mandatory orientation meeting. It is necessary that you attend an orientation meeting as the failure rate for students who do not attend has historically been 90%.

The session scheduled for CdMHS is Wednesday, September 10th, from 3:00 to 4:00pm in computer lab #232.

In case you were unaware, AP Macroeconomics and AP U.S. Government & Politics are two different AP courses and have two different AP exams in May 2015. However, the expectation is that students will be taking both as a year-long course. AP Econ will end at Winter break and AP Gov will run from early January to late April. There will be approximately one month of AP Gov material on the 1st semester AP Econ grade. There will not be a cumulative final exam in the first semester however there will be two immediately before AP testing in the Spring.

The two courses are similar to college courses one would take at OCC or IVC. AP Econ covers abstract concepts, like Physics, Calculus & Music. AP Gov is similar to history courses students have taken in the past. However, students might find it more challenging if they did not take AP US History last year. Students should invest at least one hour of studying each day. But most importantly, to be successful, online learners must be responsible and independent learners.

There will be weekly, “live" online meetings scheduled Wednesday nights. I will explain concepts, like a tutor, and teach how to take FRQs. FRQs will also be taken at these sessions. Students must attend at least 8 of 10 sessions each semester. There will also be proctored mid-terms and final exams that must be taken at your home school.

Please contact me prior to the meeting if you have any questions. I look forward to meeting you next week.

Mr. Hiles
