Message from the principal:

Greetings!   As I begin my third year as the principal of Corona del Mar High School and enter my 36th year in education, I am equally as excited as when I was a brand new teacher.   Great things are happening within our learning community and I am pleased to share them with you.

Our district has three areas of focus to assure we are meeting the needs of our students– Academics, Behavior and Creativity.  So I will describe what we are doing within each of these areas.

Academics- We continue to build our Advanced Placement course offerings by preparing our students in grades 7-9 to have the confidence to take at least one or two AP courses before they graduate.  We currently offer 22 different AP courses.   Also, we continue to use the Monday Late Start time for teacher collaboration and training.  Our goal is all students will have the opportunity to experience a guaranteed and viable curriculum regardless of which teacher they may have.  We want to assure our students that being in class every day, every period will be worthwhile, relevant and engaging.

Behavior- This year we have a team of teachers being trained in the research-based Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) philosophy.  As a team we will be determining three key behaviors we want to foster in all CdM students throughout their six years at Corona del Mar Middle and High School. As of to date we are considering integrity, compassion and perseverance and discussing best practices to brand these three qualities as “Who We Are At CdM.”

Creativity- This year we are fully implementing two signature academies to provide interested students with a rich learning experience in either the Performing Arts and Multimedia Academy (PAMA) or in the Academy of Global Studies (AGS).  For students who have a talent and passion for the arts in any of the following disciplines – visual arts, choral, dance, drama, or instrumental - PAMA will provide a mentor teacher and a sequential set of courses to prepare them for a focused study at the post-secondary level.  For students who want to pursue an international post-secondary experience, AGS will provide them with the opportunity to become bilingual in French, Spanish or Mandarin and to take courses that will develop their global perspectives.
