CdMHS Club Honored for K-9 Police Officer Protection Efforts

Corona del Mar High School Club Honored for K-9 Police Officer Protection Efforts

Thanks to 16-year-old Corona del Mar High School (CdMHS) junior, Jenny Conde, police departments throughout Orange County have been able to vest ten K-9 police dogs. “We’ve raised $20,000 thus far and have bought ten vests, we’re about to buy five more, they’re about $1,300 each.” Conde said. Jenny, the founder of the Vest-A-Dog Club at CdMHS, and her fellow club members have been fundraising to provide K-9 police dogs with bullet-proof vests. Jenny shared that her love for dogs was the biggest motivation when she decided to start the Vest-A-Dog Club at CdMHS. She first learned about the national organization, Vest-A-Dog, which raises money to buy protection for K-9 units across the country, when she was in the second grade. The idea stuck with her and Jenny decided to start the club two years ago. With the help of Newport Beach School Resource Officer Vlad Anderson the club has been a huge success. “The best part has been the learning experience, running a club is a lot like running a business,” Conde said, “we’ve had to learn how to manage funds, organize effective fundraisers, and do our own PR.” The club not only raises awareness but they also sponsor and participate in fundraising activities that go towards the purchase of K-9 protective vests.  On April 14, 2015, Conde and her club members were recognized for their hard work and achievements at the Orange County Board of Supervisors. “Not only are we thankful for what you have achieved, but I speak for all of us when I say we are so proud of your accomplishments and hard work.” Orange County Supervisor, Todd Spitzer said. “You’re light years ahead of your time and for that we applaud you!” Spitzer, a former police officer explained the importance of providing protective vests to all K-9 police officers and the vital role they play in saving lives. K-9 police officers face the same if not greater, risks human police officers face in performing their duties because police dogs are often sent to investigate dangerous situations either alone or ahead of their human partners. The CdMHS Vest-A-Dog club was presented with an “Exemplary Recognition” award for raising awareness to the dangers police K-9’s face and striving to provide protective vests to all K-9 police officers in Orange County.
